Sought-after young pianist Benjamin Grosvenor joins Oxford's Professional Symphony Orchestra in one of the most overtly Romantic piano concertos ever written. The programme is completed by Carl Orff's colourful setting of medieval mores – life lived to the full under the inescapable shadow of fate – with the work's famous, vibrant choruses provided by the internationally acclaimed London Symphony Chorus.

The Philomusica takes to the great outdoors of Christ Church’s Tom Quad in a memorable midsummer musical extravaganza to celebrate The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. There will be a sense of history repeating as it is just over 50 years since a similar concert was first put on by students in Tom Quad in 1961. 2012 also marks the bicentenary of 1812, thus the concert’s finale of Tchaikovsky’s famous overture is entirely appropriate.

Bach’s brilliantly concise Magnificat is complemented by contrasting concertos. His own Third Brandenburg for strings is framed by two fine examples of Telemann’s inexhaustible inventiveness – the splendidly ceremonial trumpet-dominated Concerto in D and a Concerto in E for the delightfully intimate trio of flute, oboe d’amore and viola d’amore.

In recognition of the 2012 London Olympics the Oxford Philomusica’s virtuoso trumpeters offer their own special salute – a selection from the rich heritage of brilliant baroque consort music for trumpets and organ from the English and French courts. The programme features works by Purcell, Handel, Lully and Rameau, and is completed by some timely music of John Williams.

Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture – understandably dubbed by George Grove ‘the greatest marvel of early maturity that the world has ever seen in music’ – is mirrored by his recollection of youthful touring experiences in the bright Mediterranean colours of the Midsummer. The centrepiece of this evening’s tribute to prodigies is Mozart’s emotionally finely nuanced last Piano Concerto with legendary soloist Menahem Pressler, founder and pianist of the Beax Arts Trio.
