It gives me great pleasure to present to you the programme for the 2012 Chipping Campden Music Festival. Artistically 2011 was going to be a hard act to follow but I hope you agree that we have another exciting programme for you. Our president Paul Lewis is still involved in his two year exploration of the late piano music of Schubert and, in addition to having two appearances from him in 2012, we have taken the opportunity to extend this theme to include two of Schubert’s finest chamber works, the C major quintet and the Octet. Over the years we have welcomed some of the world...
We are delighted to be bringing classical music back to Cornerstone, and what a lovely way to start. These professional, talented musicians are playing a delightful programme. Formed by members of the Southbank Sinfonia, the Ensemble takes its name from father and son Sir Lennox and Michael Berkeley. They champion unusual British music alongside the standard chamber music repertoire. Here playing Bach’s Prelude and Fugue arranged for string trio, Lennox Berkeley's String trio and Beethoven's String Trio Op.9 No.1, this is a beautiful afternoon of music.
Following the huge success of Michael Bochmann’s history of the violin at the same venue last year, ESO regular and published author Alice McVeigh will reveal the story of her own instrument, with illustration. She will be accompanied by ESO sub-principal cellist Anna Joubert, who will be there to "put Alice in her place if necessary..."
Tickets
£13.50, ESO Friends £12.50, Students £6.50.
Available from John and Jan on 01684 576988 and from ESO Box Office 01386 791044

Sought-after young pianist Benjamin Grosvenor joins Oxford's Professional Symphony Orchestra in one of the most overtly Romantic piano concertos ever written. We are so delighted to see the Philharmonia back again to close this season, and with what a programme! An English summer feast with an English conductor and leading English soloist to add to the mix. Julian Lloyd Webber’s recording of the Delius cello Concerto was described as ‘a version to treasure’ in Gramophone Magazine, a plaudit not often offered and hard to ignore. Martyn Brabbins and the Philharmonia have a strong affinity for this repertoire and the combination of orchestra, conductor and soloist should allow us to leave the Sheldonian for this season in great...

For our 2012 summer concerts, Cantores are teaming up with the early music ensemble The Six to perform a rich medley of choral and instrumental music from the Renaissance and Early Baroque period, when – very different from today – composers didn’t mind too much whether their music was sung or played.
After all, without our modern means to record or play back music electronically or mechanically, households and courts in the 16th and 17th centuries had to make do with whatever music-making tools they had to hand, whether voice or instrument.

In the parish hall of St Michael’s Under Ware, the Rev Arthur Bender stages a night of the Pirates of Penzance, to raise money for church funds, with a cast of church wardens and audience members. In the first half, we revel in his rehearsals and in the second we watch agog the fruits of his labour. Hilarious, rollicking, with live music and a big set. You must see these Cornerstone favourites on a limited run!

The Philomusica takes to the great outdoors of Christ Church’s Tom Quad in a memorable midsummer musical extravaganza to celebrate The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. There will be a sense of history repeating as it is just over 50 years since a similar concert was first put on by students in Tom Quad in 1961. 2012 also marks the bicentenary of 1812, thus the concert’s finale of Tchaikovsky’s famous overture is entirely appropriate.

Oxford Philomusica’s first dedicated series of chamber music concerts will take the form of early evening hour-long concerts at Oxford’s Maison Française, featuring the distinguished principal players of the Orchestra: the Soloists of Oxford Philomusica.
This concert ends the season with a sequence of sonorities from the leading trio of French impressionists – Debussy’s intimate, introspective Sonata, Roussel’s engagingly exploratory Sérénade, and Ravel’s characteristically fastidious homage to his one-time mentor, Faur...
Oxford Harmonic Society will be performing Haydn's Creation in English. It is one of his greatest choral works and thrills audiences today just as much as it did at its first performance in Vienna in 1798. The concert also features the Orchestra of Stowe Opera and conductor Robert Secret.

Between them these rising stars present Schubert's Rondo Brilliante in B minor D895, Ysaye's Solo Sonata and Prokfiev's Violin Sonata No. 2 Op. 94, for an afternoon of spine-tingling romance.

Bach’s brilliantly concise Magnificat is complemented by contrasting concertos. His own Third Brandenburg for strings is framed by two fine examples of Telemann’s inexhaustible inventiveness – the splendidly ceremonial trumpet-dominated Concerto in D and a Concerto in E for the delightfully intimate trio of flute, oboe d’amore and viola d’amore.

Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture – understandably dubbed by George Grove ‘the greatest marvel of early maturity that the world has ever seen in music’ – is mirrored by his recollection of youthful touring experiences in the bright Mediterranean colours of the Midsummer. The centrepiece of this evening’s tribute to prodigies is Mozart’s emotionally finely nuanced last Piano Concerto with legendary soloist Menahem Pressler, founder and pianist of the Beax Arts Trio.
